4 Quick Tips to Becoming an ARC Reader

Get free copies of new releases before they hit the stores in exchange for a review!

By: Katie Henry

It is an exciting idea to receive free copies of books that have not hit the stores yet. It may mean getting a sequel sooner or just getting a first look at a new book before everyone else.

Why don’t more people become ARC Readers? Well, there is still an exchange happening, just not monetary. Getting started as an ARC reader can be tricky. There is more to it than just requesting a book and receiving it.

However, starting out is not as daunting as it seems, and we are here to help with four quick tips!

What is ARC Reading?

ARC stands for Advanced Reader Copy. Readers can receive ARC copies for free from authors and publishers upon request.

Typically, readers will request a copy of the book before it hits stores. In return, they will post an honest review and/or promote the book on their social media platforms.

It is possible to receive physical copies of unreleased books. However, smaller/self-published authors may send digital copies as it is cheaper. Plus, there is no promise that their ARC readers will stay true to their word and promote the book.

Most ARC readers complete reviews for free, taking the book as payment. However, after building a strong portfolio of reviews, it is possible to turn ARC reading into a side hustle.

Tips on becoming an ARC reader!

1. Read, read, read!

Reading like crazy will help build a knowledge base. Understanding various genres, themes and various other aspects of books will make the reviews more comprehensive. People looking at reviews want to know what makes the book a good book.

Furthermore, to be a book reviewer, reading should already be fun. If reading feels more like a chore, reading with a deadline will feel even worse.

While reading, try practicing writing reviews—something more in-depth than the typical “I liked this book.” This will build a portfolio and create experience with writing longer reviews.

2. Start a book blog

This may sound a little time-consuming, but it is not as complicated as it sounds.

The book blog could be something as simple as an Instagram page with pictures of books already read. Captions could include thoughts and some hashtags. Other options include a TikTok page like the ones on #BookTok.

Join online book blog communities to create a following and make new book buddies! Engaging in the book community may develop connections with authors looking for ARC readers.

Note: It is possible to get ARC copies without a book blog. However, authors typically want ARC readers with an audience to promote their books.

3. Sign up for ARC platforms

NetGalley is a platform that allows readers to find available ARC copies. Some are available for all readers, while others need to be requested.

ARC readers on NetGalley are held to a standard. Missing a review for a requested book will affect credibility. This helps authors be assured that readers will keep their promise.

Goodreads is a common platform for avid readers. It keeps track of books read, wish lists and reviews. It also can be a place for ARC readers to find their next read.

On Goodreads, search for groups such as “Read and Review,” “ARC Readers,” and other similar names. These groups easily connect ARC readers to authors.

Furthermore, with correspondence and reviews happening on one platform, authors can confirm a reader’s credibility in minutes.

4. Create a review portfolio

Good or bad, authors want to see what type of reviews their readers will write. It is a good idea to compile some of the best reviews to easily send to authors—consider it like a resume!

Try to pick a variety of previously written reviews. They should show that there is an understanding of what makes a book good and bad. While there usually is no word count, pick comprehensive reviews.

Continuously switch out reviews in the portfolio to keep them updated and to show off the newest best review. Choosing reviews from a variety of genres gives the portfolio a wider range.
